Landover, Md. (May 2, 2016) – Giant Food, LLC announced today that it is the new title sponsor for the 24th Annual Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle, taking place June 25 and 26 on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC. Attended by more than 100,000 barbecue and music fans each year, the award-winning Barbecue Battle is one of the largest and most unique food and music festivals in the country. As the nation’s top barbecue cooking competition, the event also offers two days of non-stop entertainment with 30 bands on three stages, plus appearances from celebrity chefs, TV cooking personalities and cookbook authors.
“Giant is excited to be the title sponsor of the 24th Annual Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle, where attendees will have an opportunity to taste many of the very best products we offer in our stores, including delicious local offerings,” said Gordon Reid, president, Giant Food, LLC. “Giant looks forward to bringing this backyard celebration of great food, great cooking and great music to thousands of people on Pennsylvania Avenue, America’s Main Street.”
The signature cooking event gives Giant the opportunity to spotlight its unique products and brands, and gives participants a chance to learn more about how Giant helps them save money, save time, and eat well. The two-day event will include Taste of Giant sampling pavilion, Nature’s Promise Airstream trailer, Giant’s cooking demonstration stage and Giant’s Own Brand tent, along with dozens of top national brands featured in the main sampling pavilion. Additionally, local partners, such as BrightFarms – an exclusive partner from Culpeper County, Va., that provides locally-sourced baby greens and tomatoes to Giant – will showcase their products in the “local flavors” pavilion. The event will also feature consultations with Giant pharmacists and in-store nutritionists.
The Barbecue Battle has raised more than $1.7 million for local nonprofits in the past. This year, event fundraising will support the Capital Area Food Bank’s mission to alleviate hunger in Washington D.C. area. Giant has a long-standing partnership with local food banks, providing monetary and product donations to assist regional food bank partners which accounted for $8 million of Giant’s overall donations in 2015. Additionally, Giant also donated more than $1 million in Fighting Child Hunger grants to its five Feeding America food banks to help them implement programs and initiatives to combat child hunger. The Barbecue Battle enables Giant to further aid their partners in fighting hunger insecurity in the Greater Washington, D.C. community.
Event fundraising will also assist the USO-Metro’s mission to support those who serve, and their families, in Washington D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia. In the past, Giant has partnered with the USO to host an annual in-store giving campaign which sold care packages for service members and their loved ones.
