Giant Food kicks off new Pediatric Cancer Fundraising Program
Landover, Md. (September 1, 2016) – Giant Food of Landover, Md. announced today the launch of a new fundraising program to benefit the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and The Children’s Cancer Foundation, Inc. Giant’s Pediatric Cancer Fundraising Program aims to raise $1.6 million this year through sales of $5 coupon books valued at $85. One hundred percent of proceeds will go directly to support pediatric cancer research and care.
“The entire Giant family is excited to, again, support the great work of two local organizations - Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and The Children’s Cancer Foundation, Inc.,” said Gordon Reid, President, Giant Food of Landover, Md. “Every year, I am inspired by our stores’ enthusiasm to raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research and care.”
Each year, four local children who are patients at the center are chosen to serve as program ambassadors. Each ambassador, profiled below, has faced a variety of challenges but the treatments they have received enable them to enjoy their childhood more fully.
- Riley is a ten-year-old with Pilocytic Astrocytoma. From Ferndale, Md., Riley studies ballet, tap, jazz and lyrical dance and is a member of a local competitive dance team.
- Thirteen-year-old Amir’s Hodgkin’s Lymphoma recently relapsed but his diagnosis has not gotten in the way of his adventurous spirit. A resident of Catonsville, Md., he loves playing basketball and football, and when he grows up wants to be an engineer or an NBA basketball player.
- Connor, a ten-year-old diagnosed with Rosai-Dorfman disease, loves reading and swimming. A fourth grader from Arnold, Md., Connor has a passion for Legos and playing the trumpet.
- Eleven-year-old Grace has been diagnosed with Stage IV Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. A lover of ballet and jazz, Grace also plays the trumpet and is an avid reader. She lives in Abingdon, Md., and doesn’t let her diagnosis stop her from activities she loves in and out of school.
“Throughout September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Giant is supporting pediatric cancer research, and the work that our faculty at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center does every day,” said Dr. Donald Small, Director of Pediatric Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. “With Giant’s help and the help of its customers, we hope to raise $1.6 million for childhood cancer this year.”
Since 2005, Giant has raised $16.3 million for pediatric cancer research. Giant continues that commitment this year with the Giant Pediatric Cancer Fundraising Program.
