Giant Food Celebrates Black History Month
2015 Profiles in Excellence Honors Innovators of the Food Industry
Landover, Md. (February 2, 2015) – Giant Food celebrates Black History Month this February with the release of its annual Profiles in Excellence brochure. Profiles in Excellence celebrates the significant contributions to society made by African Americans, and this year’s brochure highlights African American inventors and innovators who changed the food industry. This marks the 23rd year that Giant has published Profiles in Excellence.
Profiles in Excellence will be available in all Giant Food locations beginning February 1, 2015, while supplies last. The inventors and innovators featured in this year’s brochure include George Washington Carver, who developed innovative new agricultural methods for a variety of plants—most famously peanuts; George Crum, inventor of the first potato chips; Augustus Jackson, known as the “father of ice cream;” Alfred L. Cralle, inventor of the ice cream scoop; and Frederick Jones, who developed a portable unit for cooling the air in trucks carrying perishables. Beyond the development of these essential inventions and techniques, their personal stories of perseverance make these innovators truly inspirational.
“Giant is proud to celebrate African American heritage and pay tribute to these pioneers in our new Profiles in Excellence publication,” said Jamie Miller, Manager of Public and Community Relations, Giant Food. “This Black History Month, we recognize the immeasurable contributions of these individuals in shaping American life. We invite our community members to join us in our salute to these innovators.”
Giant has provided local schools and community organizations free copies of Giant’s Profiles in Excellence brochures to use as an educational tool to increase awareness about the achievements and contributions that African Americans have made throughout history. Copies of the brochures are also available in all Giant stores.
