Giant Food Joins The Great American Milk Drive To Bring Milk To Local Food Banks Shoppers Provided Critical Source of Nutrition for Children without Healthy Meal Options

Landover, Md. (August 12, 2015) Giant Food of Landover, Md. supported The Great American Milk Drive through an in-store campaign during the month of June to help deliver critically-needed gallons of milk to children and families in the local community. Customers had the opportunity to make a $4 donation at the checkout, which equated to one gallon of milk, and resulted in Giant contributing a total of $21,924 to food banks throughout its market area, including the Maryland Food Bank, Capital Area Food Bank, Fredericksburg Area Food Bank, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and the Food Bank of Delaware.

“Throughout National Dairy Month, we were focused on powering the play of those in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia by encouraging much-needed, nutrient-rich milk donations,” said Gail Street, Vice President, Integrated Marketing Communications, Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association.

“Giant is proud to have participated in another successful Great American Milk Drive and to have supported the Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association and our shared initiatives of combating food insecurity and promoting hunger awareness,” said Jamie Miller, Manager of Public and Community Relations, Giant Food. “We also thank our customers for coming together to help put milk on the table for many families in our community.”

Milk is one of the most requested items by food bank clients year-round, and it is especially needed during the summer when kids may be missing out on nutritious meals provided through school breakfast and lunch programs. Many Americans are generous with canned and dry goods, but milk is less likely to be donated as it is perishable. On average, food banks are only able to provide the equivalent of less than one gallon of milk per person per year.

The Great American Milk Drive is a year-round initiative, and donating as little as $5 at will provide milk to a hungry child or family in a local community. By entering a zip code, supporters can ensure that the milk is delivered from the farm to a local Feeding America food bank.
