Grocer Recognized for Outstanding Contributions to Local Community
Landover, Md. (November 18, 2014) – Progressive Grocer, a leading retail food industry trade publication, has named Giant Food and all of the Ahold USA businesses as 2014 Retailer of the Year. The recognition was given for the company’s exceptional philanthropic contributions and community outreach efforts. Giant Food is profiled in the October 2014 issue, which can be found at www.progressivegrocer.com.
“Giving back to the community is part of our DNA at Giant Food. It started with our founders and it continues today,” said Gordon Reid, President of Giant Food of Landover, Maryland. “Our customers appreciate that shopping at Giant helps us to support local food banks, health and nutrition programs, environmental initiatives, and other worthy causes in our region. We take tremendous pride in receiving Progressive Grocer’s 2014 Retailer of the Year award, and we thank our associates and customers for helping us to make a difference.”
Progressive Grocer’s profile highlights Giant Food’s community efforts related to charitable giving, health and wellness initiatives, and associate engagement. Longstanding programs like Giant’s annual September Hunger Action Month campaign to support local food banks, school fundraising through the popular A+ School Rewards program, and the support of local scientists fighting to cure pediatric cancer all contributed to Giant’s selection as Retailer of the Year.

As the voice of the retail food industry for 90 years, Progressive Grocer’s core audience targets top management at headquarters and key decision makers at store-level from chain supermarkets, to regional and local independent grocers, supercenters, wholesale distributors, manufacturers and other supply chain training partners.
