Building Healthy Communities

Supporting Our Communities

The grocer is the heart of any community — and hunger is a problem in every community. That’s a responsibility we take seriously, and it’s why Giant Food, together with local partners, has made it our mission to help fight hunger in all of its forms.

Meat the Needs

One of the greatest challenges in the fight against hunger is ensuring that those in need receive enough protein to fulfill the requirements of a balanced diet. Giant Food tackles this challenge head-on, with our Meat the Needs program, which has donated over 2 million pounds of meat to regional food banks.

Hunger Boxes

Our “Hunger Boxes” are hand-picked care packages that contain a balanced variety of essential food items, designed for direct donation to local food banks. In 2018, Giant Food, on behalf of our customers, donated over 37,000 Hunger Boxes to the five Feeding America food banks in our region.

Giant Community Bag

Customers can purchase a Giant Community reusable shopping bag with a giving tag, and then they’ll have the power to direct a $1 donation to a local nonprofit of their choice. If the customer does not direct the donation within seven days, it will automatically be donated to a local nonprofit chosen by the store where it was sold. Available at all Giant Food locations, Giant Community shopping bags retail for $2.50 and are available at various registers and at the reusable bag rack in each store.

Pediatric Cancer Research with the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancers Center and Children’s Cancer Foundation

In 2005, Giant launched its Pediatric Cancer Research Campaign with the goal of making a difference in the fight against childhood cancer. Since then, we've raised more than $21 million to support cancer research and treatment at the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center and the Children’s Cancer Foundation.

Cash For Causes

Raise money for your non-profit with Cash for Causes. Simply purchase Cash for Causes gift cards at a 5% discount ($500 minimum purchase required), and then sell them at face value. The difference between the discounted price and the face value is profit for your non-profit.

Supporting the USO-Metro and all Troops

Whether at home or abroad, Giant Food is committed to supporting our troops: past, present, and future. Giant has partnered with the USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore since 1992 and in 2018, we donated $682,000 to their organization and over $1,000,000 to charities and organization that support the men and women of our armed forces.

Little League Baseball

Giant Food believes that children should eat healthy and have fun being active. That is why Giant sponsors over 200 little league baseball and softball teams in the area each year. Giant also partners with Ripken Baseball to host multiple “Get Out and Play” clinics for children during the spring and summer.
