Game on: Reinvent Your Tailgate

The savory aroma of juicy burgers on the grill, a cold beverage in hand, and your favorite team is about to hit the field. Gathering with friends and family to cheer on your team is surely a touchdown, but many of our favorite tailgate foods may have us calling an audible on our mealtime goals. Let’s get back to the line of scrimmage and reinvent your next tailgate.

Grilling is a fan favorite - it’s quick, easy, and offers virtually no clean up! When planning your spread, choose lean meats like chicken, turkey, and lean cuts of beef. If you’re grilling up burgers, try adding in veggies such as diced onions, tomatoes, and peppers; and substitute rolled oats for breadcrumbs to boost the fiber which will surely keep you satisfied through halftime. Think outside the box and grill up your favorite fruits and veggies, too! The heat brings out their natural sweetness and can be a refreshing addition to your tailgate feast.

Let’s move on to the side line with creamy potato and macaroni salads that are a game-time staple. While delicious, the calories in these dishes add up quickly! Try substituting plain Greek yogurt for mayo to help cut down some of those dense calories and give a boost of protein. For a lighter option, check out this Tailgate Sweet Potato Salad!

It’s the last quarter and we are entering the end zone—time for dessert! You may have 1 or 2 party goers that forgot to eat their fruits and veggies so help them score some extra points by sneaking them in as a sweet treat. This Tailgater's Chocolate Zucchini Cake will definitely satisfy your sweet tooth or make dessert easy to eat on-the-go with these Strawberry Angel Food Kabobs.

By making these simple swaps to your recipe playbook, you’re now ready to tackle your next tailgate and score big points with your home team! For more tailgating recipe ideas, check out Savory's.
