Giant Food Launches “Food 4 Families” Holiday Food Drive at all 167 Locations

Giant Food and Monumental Sports & Entertainment to also host donation drive during November 18th Washington Capitals game

Landover, Md. (November 2, 2017) - Giant Food of Landover, Md. announced today that all 167 Giant Landover store locations will participate in the “Food 4 Families” holiday food drive that will involve multiple efforts at store level and beyond to help hungry families in our community.

Giant Food stores will be collecting nonperishable items through November 23rd to be donated to five area Feeding America food banks: Capital Area Food Bank, Maryland Food Bank, Food Bank of Delaware, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank. Items accepted include canned vegetables, canned fruits, canned tuna, salmon or chicken, grains, peanut butter and more.

Each Giant Food location will also be selling prepacked Nature’s Promise meal boxes that customers can purchase for $10 each. Containing nourishing organic and free-from products such as whole wheat pasta, canned corn, and canned black beans, customers can donate the boxes they purchase to the local Feeding America branches.

According to Capital Area Food Bank, 700,000 individuals in the Washington metro area are at risk of hunger. Local area food banks have relied on Giant Food and its generous customers for over 35 years to help fill their pantry shelves before the holidays.

"The holidays should be a time of joy for everyone. The 'Food 4 Families' drive is a way we can bring our community together to support those facing hunger and food insecurity this holiday season," says Gordon Reid, President, Giant of Landover, Md. "We have a longstanding partnership with our area food banks and look forward to helping them serve our community."

Food 4 Families is being conducted in partnership with NBC4, Monumental Sports & Entertainment, WTOP Radio, NBC Sports Washington and Radio One.

"We're very excited about expanding NBC4's Food 4 Families campaign in this partnership with Giant Food this year," said Jackie Bradford, NBC4 President & General Manager. "Together with them and all of the other partners, we have the opportunity to make a significant impact in the lives of thousands of families in need this Thanksgiving."

In partnership with Monumental Sports & Entertainment, Giant Food is also encouraging Washington Capitals fans to donate a nonperishable item of their choice during the November 18th Washington

Capitals game taking place at the Capital One Arena. With each donation, supporters will receive a free poster.

"Monumental Sports & Entertainment is proud to partner with Giant Food to give back to local families in need this season," says Lee Stacey, Vice President of Corporate Partnerships, Monumental Sports & Entertainment. "The holidays are a time where people come together to support one another, and we look forward to inviting our fans to support their community through this partnership."

To wrap up the Food 4 Families program, Giant Food will donate 1,000 turkeys to each of the five Feeding America food banks the week prior to Thanksgiving, for a total of 5,000 turkeys. WTOP and Radio One will both be donating $3,500 each toward the purchase of additional turkeys.

NBC4 will host an all-day food and monetary donation drive from 6am-7pm on November 20th in front of the Capital One Arena and will be broadcasting live from that location throughout the day. Joining NBC4 will be Radio One stations Majic 102.3, Praise 104, and 93.9 WKYS, and other community partners. Donations for the purchase of turkeys can also be made online at nbcwashington.com
